Dental hygienists must complete a degree program to practice. These programs are at least 2-3 years in length. There are a number of dental hygienist schools in North Carolina, mainly community colleges. Make sure you do research so that the school you choose is approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). For those who want to become more marketable and have a greater potential for advancement, earning a bachelor’s degree may be suitable. This will open other opportunities such as corporate dental sales. In addition to the schooling needed to become a hygienist, having an up-to-date CPR certification is also a must. There are also certifications available to train hygienists how to operate x-ray equipment. The dental offices vary in terms of whether hygienists operate this equipment.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Dental Hygienists in Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Cary, High Point and Wilmington, North Carolina may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Forsyth Medical Center, Rutherford Hospital and Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
