Dental hygienists will have to complete a board approved dental hygiene program. Most dental hygiene programs consist of a lot of science courses. Dental hygienists in Oklahoma must renew their license on an annual basis. They must also complete 30 hours of continuing education for every reporting period (three years). Half of the continuing education hours must come from formalized structured learning situations, at colleges or universities at an undergraduate or college course level. The other half can come from formalized meetings, such as those through the Dental Hygienists’ Association or the Dental Hygiene Study Club Meetings, or advanced study in the form of graduate level courses, internships or residencies. The Oklahoma Board of Dentistry can provide more specific details concerning the continuing education criteria. All continuing education must be reported either annually or at the end of the three-year reporting period.
