Potential dental hygienists will continue to take other science courses as well as a large selection of dental classes through their classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction in a formal dental hygiene program. Dental hygiene programs result in an associate’s degree and typically take two years to complete, although some take up to four. There are a few dental hygienist schools in South Carolina.

South Carolina Dental Hygienist Continued Education Requirements

South Carolina issues a two-year license to dental hygienists. Dental hygienists are not allowed to practice without a current, valid license. In order to renew a license, an application must be submitted to the South Carolina Board of Dentistry, along with forms documenting the required 14 hours of continuing education and verifying current CPR certification from approved providers. The board requires that continuing education hours be reported annually as well.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Dental Hygienists in Columbia, Charleston, North Charleston and Greenville, South Carolina may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Roper Hospital, Palmetto Health, Providence Hospital and Medical University of South Carolina.
