Any dentist who wishes to become licensed to practice in Ontario must show proof that he or she has graduated from accredited dental schools within Canada or in the United States. At least four years of dentistry study must be completed, resulting in a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree. There are many fine, accredited dental schools in Ontario, other parts of Canada, and in the U.S. which qualify students to become licensed dentists in Ontario.

In dental school, you will not only take courses in dentistry, science and mathematics, but you will also complete a two-year residency in which you will gain valuable clinical experience. This experience, combined with your college classes, will prepare you to take the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB) licensing exam after graduation. Some students continue studies after obtaining their general dentistry training, and engage in continuing education degree programs. These programs will allow them to specialize in a variety of recognized disciplines within dentistry in Ontario, including pediatric dentistry, periodontics, orthodontics, public health dentistry, and oral surgery. Having a subspecialty will open up many more job opportunities within Ontario and all of Canada and will also increase your earning potential in the province and in the country.
