Those interested in dental schools in Alabama will be glad to know that there are options, which don’t necessitate leaving the state. Alabama boasts one accredited school that has a program for general dentistry as well as five specialty programs including periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, and prosthodontics. Prospective dentists should be aware, though, that when applying for any competitive post-baccalaureate program, it is often necessary to apply to more than one school.  One can, in fact, apply for admission to dental programs across the nation through ADEA’s Associated American Dental Schools Application Service.

Alabama dentists are licensed through the Board of Dental Examiner of Alabama.  Candidates must provide evidence of having successfully completed dental school as well as 90 units of prerequisite classes (including 6 semester hours of math, 12 of English, 16 of chemistry, 8 each of physics and biology). Also necessary are character references and hepatitis testing.

Once licensed as a dentist, a person must continue to take classes to stay on top of the field. Continuing education should be approved both by the American Dental Association and Alabama’s board. 20 CEUs are required each year for license renewal.
