Find the right school for you
The first step to becoming a dentist in Arizona is completing your education and choosing a dental school. Because dentists are independently responsible for diagnosing and treating dental conditions, they are required to complete several years of both undergraduate and dental education.
Before you can enroll in one of the dental schools in Arizona, two things must happen first: completion of an associate or bachelor degree program and passage of the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). Most students in Arizona enter dental school with a bachelor-degree level of education because it helps them to better prepare for the DAT admissions test.
In Arizona, dental schools typically award the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degrees. It is important to note that these degrees are one and the same, and you will be able to practice dentistry in Arizona with either one of them. Dental school programs in Arizona typically last about 4 years, which is in addition to the 2-4 years spent on undergraduate studies. Once you have passed the DAT and been accepted to one of Arizona’s dental schools, you will be taking courses like:
- Anatomy, Physiology, and Terminology
- CPR and First Aid
- Dental Anatomy and Pathology
- Dental Pharmacology
- Dental Radiology
By attending a campus-based dental school in Arizona, aspiring dentists in Phoenix, Tucson, Glendale, and Mesa, Arizona will find themselves well prepared for affiliation with some of the state’s largest medical facilities, including Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, Maricopa Medical Center, and Tucson Medical Center.
