Find the right school for you
Dental schools in Louisiana and across the country offer degrees including a DDS (Doctorate of Dental Surgery) and DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine). Both of these degrees are acceptable for licensure as a dentist in Louisiana. Dentistry school is taken in a graduate status after completing undergraduate courses and usually takes about four years of devoted study. Indeed, most dental schools have a prerequisite that mandates that one has finished a bachelor degree program or at least 90 credits prior to entering dental school. Courses that one must take before entering dental school include biology, organic and inorganic chemistry, physics and English.
Courses that one will commonly find in a dental school program cover both the basic and clinical sciences and include general and oral pathology, pharmacology, pain control, endodontics, and pediatric dentistry. In addition, one will usually spend the last two years of a four year dentistry program in a clinical rotation, where he or she will gain practical experience. After graduating with your DDS or DMD, you may elect to take continuing education degree programs and specialize in orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics or a host of other dental specializations. These areas of specialization will increase your marketability as a dentist in the state of Louisiana.
