Find the right school for you
Dental Economics periodical notes that, as of 2010, when looking at the student body of all the dental schools in the United States, it was found that only nine dental students currently in training are from Maine. While as of right now, there are no dental schools in Maine, opportunities exist in nearby states for students interested in pursuing dentistry training. Maine stipulates that all of its dentists must have a DMD or DDS degree. This first requires that you complete a bachelor degree program prior to enrolling in dental school.
One can expect to take about four years of training in dental school before becoming a dentist in Maine. The first two years of a dental school programs will consist of courses in the classroom, while the last two years are spent in a clinical setting, gaining real-life experience in general dentistry and rotations in specialties such as periodontology, prosthodontics and operative dentistry, craniofacial function, and oral and maxillofacial surgery. After you have completed your DMD or DDS degree, you may elect to take continuing education programs that work towards specialization. Indeed, to maintain one’s dental license in Maine, it is mandatory to take 40 credits of continuing education every two years. These courses are in addition to CPR certification, which all dentists working in Maine must also possess.
