Maryland requires that its dentists have either a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree. It is recommended that applicants to dental schools in Maryland have a bachelor degree, but some of the state’s dental schools accept students who have completed at least three academic years (consisting of 90 credits) prior to admission to dental school. Prerequisite courses for most dental school programs include biology, inorganic and organic chemistry, physics, biochemistry and English composition.

Dental school programs will typically take four years to complete, and will consist of classroom time and field experience. Courses that you can expect to take in dental school include Dental Biomaterials, General Pathology, Gross Anatomy, Oral Microbiology, Introduction to Periodontology, and Behavioral Dentistry. After graduation with either a DDS or DMD, some students opt to take continuing education degree programs in a postgraduate setting. This allows them to specialize in a certain field of dentistry within Maryland. Examples of such postgraduate training include pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, endodontics, oral-maxillofacial surgery, and prosthodontics. These programs take from two to six additional years of study to complete.
