The profession of dentistry has more breadth and depth than you might realize. While most of us are familiar with a general dentist and an orthodontist, there are a number of other specialties offered in dental schools in Michigan to consider in this field, such as doctor of dental surgery, biomaterials, endodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, and restorative dentistry.

All dental programs in Michigan require applicants to take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) administered by the American Dental Association (ADA). The examination consists of multiple choice questions that cover the following areas: a survey of natural sciences, including biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry; perceptual ability; reading comprehension and quantitative reasoning.  The test can take five hours to complete. Scores can range between 0-30 and a score of 19 or above in all areas is generally necessary.

In addition to DAT scores, dental schools in Michigan also look at an applicant’s grade point average (GPA) during college (3.5 or above is the norm) and letters of recommendation. It is recommended that candidates have also previously demonstrated an interest in activities in the dental profession, such as job shadowing or community service,

A select number of applicants will be called in for personal interviews, and among this pool of potential candidates, a limited number of spots in a dental school will be offered.
