As long as the New Hampshire Board of Dentistry approves a dental school, it is acceptable for students who seek future licensing as dentists in New Hampshire. Dental schools will offer two degree options: a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). Both of these options require about two years of classroom work and two years of clinical experience.

Courses that are found in most DMD or DDS degree programs include human biology, principles of oral disease, pain management, the structure and function of oral tissues, technical skills, biochemistry, histology, health promotion, gross anatomy, microbiology, and physiology. Upon completion of dental school, many students in New Hampshire opt to further their training through continuing education degree programs. These programs, which usually take an additional 24 months to complete, will allow the dentist to specialize in one of a variety of areas, including pediatric dentistry, orthodontia, periodontia, endodontics, oral medicine, and maxillofacial surgery. Offered as residency programs, students in these rotations will gain valuable clinical experience in their chosen area of specialization. Scholarly academic research is also involved and required in many of these programs.
