Find the right school for you
To be admitted to dental schools in New York, a candidate must have a bachelor’s degree, with a minimum of 90 credit hours, although some schools prefer candidates who actually have 120 credits. Most successful dental school candidates in New York have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students should have a college coursework background in physics, biology, inorganic or general chemistry and organic chemistry, including lab work. It is also strongly recommended that students have taken biochemistry, biology, mathematics, sociology, history, fine arts and a foreign language.
In addition, all applicants must take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) and submit a certified copy of test scores. Three confidential letters of recommendation from science professors or one composite letter from a pre-health committee is also typically required by most New York dental schools. A personal interview with an admissions committee is the next step for the select few candidates that will be considered for admission.
Keep in mind that many dental schools accept applications on a rolling basis and it is to the applicant’s advantage to visit schools of interest and apply for admission to programs as early as possible. Admissions to most dental programs in New York are highly competitive. One dentistry school in New York reports that it received approximately 2500 applications for admission to its DDS program over a nine year period. Of those applications, the review board actually interviewed only 256 applicants, 75 of whom were actually enrolled in the school of dentistry.
