Ohio is an excellent state in which to seek out an education in dentistry. Though many states in the US don’t even a have a school of dentistry, there is not just one dentist school in Ohio, but several.

Dentistry schools are competitive. They require applicants to have already earned a bachelor’s degree in a field like biology or chemistry, to have passed the DAT, and to have excellent transcripts that show an interest and commitment in community based extracurricular activities.

The curriculum for dentistry schools may vary slightly from area to area, but for the most part they follow the same general patterns.
Your first two years will be spent in class, where you’ll start by studying the oral anatomy, relevant health and body systems, and advanced medical subjects like biochemistry and physiology, as well as learning dentist’s ethics and clinical regulations.

After that, the closing two years of your doctorate will be spent in the field, where you’ll work in a specialized training facility under licensed dentists, who will show you how to perform all the procedures and duties you’ll be expected to know, and then supervise and guide you as you do them.

After that, you’ve got to put all you’ve learned to the test by taking and passing the NBDE, which is a comprehensive exam that tests both your general knowledge, and clinical abilities. From there, you either graduate and begin working, or continue your schooling to work towards a specialization.

There are several specializations open to dental professionals, ranging from working with kids, to crafting and implementing orthopedic aids to re-aligning and re-structuring patients’ mouths. Given the number of dentistry schools in Ohio, it’s likely one will offer at least a certification, if not a full degree, in your intended area of study. Specialization programs can last two to four years, and are modeled after a standard dentistry curriculum.
