If you’re hoping to get into a dentist school in Oklahoma, there are some things you should know.

They’re quite competitive, and even though the US Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a shortfall of dentists in the coming years, they’re still looking for applicants whose transcripts show dedication, focus, and a wide range of extracurricular activities.

Even if you didn’t do so hot in high school, dentistry hopefuls still need to earn a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, like chemistry or biology, before they can apply for a dentistry school, as well as pass the DAT. This will allow you the perfect opportunity to showcase your talent and ability.
When you do get into a dental school in Oklahoma, your curriculum will follow a certain set path.

The first two years are spent studying and learning in the classroom where you’ll be taught anatomy, oral health systems, and all the aspects of medicine specific to the practice of dentistry.  You’ll also be led through all the procedures you’re going to need to be able to perform all applicable duties, from teeth cleaning to root canals, and you’ll be introduced to the tools with which you’ll do them.

The last two years of your doctorate studies are spent in a special teaching clinic, where you study under and with licensed dentists, and perform operations and duties under their supervision. It’s here you’ll hone the skills you’ll need to succeed on the NBDE, which you need to pass to in order to practice dentistry, as well as when you begin your career.

At some point you may find you want to specialize in a specific area of dentistry; there are several specializations open to dentists, ranging from public advocacy to the performing of complex surgical and radiological operations.

If you’re looking to specialize in Oklahoma, you may need to go out of state, but chances are you’ll at least be able to earn a certification, if not a full degree, without going too far, which is enough for most dental professionals.
