To become licensed to practice dentistry in South Carolina, one must possess either a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) or DMD (Doctor of Dental Medicine) degree from any of the accredited dental schools in South Carolina or from an accredited school in the United States or Canada. Attending dental school typically takes place after one has either completed 90 credits of undergraduate study or has graduated with a bachelor degree. Most dental schools have prerequisite courses one must take prior to admission, including chemistry, physics, biology, English, and mathematics.

Dental school usually takes four to five years to complete. Once you graduate, you must pass a national licensing exam and the South Carolina Jurisprudence Examination in order to work as a licensed dentist in the state. Some students choose to fulfill continuing education degree programs following their general dentistry studies. These classes allow a dentist to specialize in one particular area, such as orthodontics, prosthodontics, or pediatric dentistry. Studies have shown that in most states, including South Carolina, dentists who have a specialty earn more than general dentists. If you choose this route, you must also pass the specialty licensing exam in South Carolina prior to practicing dentistry in the state.
