Find the right school for you
Virginia has a number of excellent four-year dental schools with programs in general dentistry leading to the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. The curriculum generally emphasizes three broad areas: basic biomedical sciences, clinical sciences, and behavioral sciences.
The biomedical sciences courses cover human anatomy, genetics, material science, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology and physiology. The clinical sciences prepare the student for the actual practice of dentistry and introduce various specialties in dentistry, such as orthodontics. The behavioral sciences cover such topics as health care delivery, practice management and professional ethics. Students in Virginia will have an opportunity to gain laboratory and clinical experience throughout the four years of dental school as well.
If this is an area of study that interests you, keep in mind that dental school slots are highly competitive. Many dental schools have a rolling admissions acceptance policy, so those who send in their applications early increase their chances for admission to the school of their choice.
All dental schools in Virginia require prospective students to take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). Students are allowed to retake the test if they are not happy with their scores, but many schools limit the number of results they will accept to three. Some schools report the average scores attained by their students to be a 20 on the DAT.
Letters of recommendation are also a requirement of the admissions practice, with most schools requesting a minimum of three letters from professionals and usually one has to be from a high-ranking academic in Virginia.
