Healthcare administration jobs in the Washington, DC area are going to be found either in large hospitals or in long term care institutions. The District of Columbia has requirements for those who will fill these positions, but the need for a healthcare administrator license is only found in the institutions that offer long term care. Hospitals and large outpatient facilities do not require a license, though the employers themselves will most likely require certification as well as specific educational credentials.
For those who wish to be employed in long term care facilities, the process is very straightforward. A bachelor degree in healthcare management is required, along with experience and certification. An administrator in training program must be complete as well as logged hours of experience and a letters of recommendation and verification of skills and requirements met. Some of these requirements may be waived if the applicant holds a master degree in healthcare management. Upon completion of these requirements, the applicant can submit an application to the District of Columbia Department of Health, Board of Nursing Home Administration. Renewal is required by June 30th of every even numbered calendar year.
Those who wish to apply for healthcare administrator jobs in the District of Columbia without applying to long term care facilities will be expected to hold a master degree, and may be expected to pursue continuing education requirements.
