There is no doubt that this is a high-paying profession in the District of Columbia. In fact, the median lactation consultant salary in District of Columbia is estimated to be around $102,000 each year. Although freshly graduated lactation consultants may earn slightly less as they are just starting out, it is safe to say that this profession compensates well at all levels.
In 2006, a study was released showing that only 69.6% of all children in the District of Columbia had been breastfed at some point in their lives. The national average was around 74%, which means that the District of Columbia has room for improvement. With that being said, lactation consultants in the District of Columbia have a real opportunity to promote healthy breastfeeding practices and increase the number of children that are being breastfed, essentially equating to more job opportunities for professionals like you.
Keep in mind that organizations like the District of Columbia Breastfeeding Coalition and the Breastfeeding Center for Greater Washington have the same goals as you do: to help increase the number of children being breastfed and to make resources available. Not only can you add to your professional credentials by aligning yourself with these organizations, but you can also help to make a positive impact in the lives of children statewide.
