Washington D.C. educational guidelines for licensed practical nurses (LPN) are very similar to those of most states.  Aspiring LPNs must first complete a high school education or its equivalent.  In addition, they must be at least 18 years old.  Becoming familiar with medical terminology will also prove beneficial to students pursuing a nursing career.

Next, a licensed practical nurse educational training program must be completed through one of the Washington, DC LPN schools.  A number of institutions including technical and vocational schools, junior and community colleges, and hospitals and major universities offer these programs.  A practical nursing program can usually be completed within a year.

LPN training programs will offer students a well-rounded nursing education focusing on classroom instruction in the following subjects:

  • Anatomy
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Pharmacology
  • Physiology
  • Nutrition
  • Growth and Development
  • Physical Education

In addition, some programs offer specialty courses that focus on a specific medical area of expertise such as geriatrics, pediatrics, or obstetrics.

Beyond classroom learning, nursing students are also given opportunities to apply their knowledge in real-life scenarios through supervised clinical practice.  This is done under the supervision of a licensed medical professional in the District of Columbia.  It is worth noting that there are currently no continuing education requirements for LPNs in Washington D.C.

Through comprehensive training programs, aspiring LPNs in Washington, D.C. / District of Columbia may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the district, including Washington Hospital Center, and the George Washington University Medical Center.
