Steps to Become an Occupational Therapist in Washington, D.C.

After proper education is received through Washington, DC occupational therapy schools, aspiring Occupational Therapists need to sit for a national OT competency examination, and gain certification. This examination is administered by the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Candidates for examination must submit a “Certification Examination Application” obtained through the NBCOT website prior to examination. Students must successfully pass examination to qualify for Occupational Therapist licensing in Washington, DC. 

The next step to becoming an OT is to get an OT license in DC:

  1. Go to the DCBOT website and obtain a “New License Application” form. This form will request the following information: personal identifying data including name, address, phone number, date of birth, place of birth, social security number, and gender.
  2. When submitting application, include 2 recent head-shot photographs.
  3. Must attach a NBCOT letter of certification.
  4. If applicant possesses an active or inactive professional license in another state(s), documentation proving good standing is required from each state thereof.
  5. Completely fill-out in detail the section regarding professional school program attended by applicant.
  6. Applicant must also list all post-graduate experience up until the present.
  7. Lastly, the applicant must take a short questionnaire pertaining to ethics, professional conduct, and drug abuse.
  8. An application fee of $264 must accompany completed application.
  9. Once application is approved, and license is granted, all licenses will expire every other year on September 30th. Renewal application, renewal fee, and continuing education credits will need to be submitted on, or before, that time to maintain license. 

By getting an Occupational Therapist license, OTs can begin to find work in area hospitals, rehabilitation centers, outpatient care centers, healthcare schools and clinical care facilities. Once employment is achieved, Occupational Therapists can anticipate a positive occupational outlook.
