Washington, D.C. Public Health Education
The Department of Education distinguishes the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) as an agency that is able to accredit Washington, DC public health schools, as well as public health programs offered outside of the school environment. Graduates from an accredited school typically earn the Master of Public Health (MPH) degree; however, one may earn other masters or doctoral degrees. The association that represents the CEPH accredited schools is the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH). One of the biggest responsibilities of the ASPH is the development and maintenance of the Master of Public Health (MPH) core competency model. This is the foundation of the curriculum for the MPH program. The model distinguishes between 5 main areas of public health: biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences, health policy and management, and environmental health science. Washington, DC currently has one CEPH accredited school. Furthermore, the school is a member of the ASPH association. This school offers a masters and doctrine program, as well as graduate certificates and joint and special programs.
