Once the educational component of a D.C. radiology tech training program has been completed (certificate or associate’s degree), the student is eligible to apply for and sit for the national certification examination. This examination is administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and is intended to measure a candidate’s baseline, entry-level knowledge of the field to determine if they are qualified to begin practicing as a radiology technologist. Complete application and details are available at the ARRT website (www.arrt.org).
Since the District of Columbia does not require licensure before practicing, once you have successfully completed the ARRT examination, you are then eligible to begin seeking employment. Should you decide to relocate to a state that does require licensure, you would need to be certain you were eligible to meet that state’s licensure requirements.
District of Columbia Radiology Tech Continuing Education
The ARRT has established standards for continuing education. In a two-year period, a radiology technologist must report a minimum of twenty-four hours. Examples include attendance at or presentation at a professional meeting or conference, publication in a peer reviewed journal, and completion of additional training in the field. More specifics can be located on the ARRT website.
