Why should I consider EMT and paramedic school?EMTs and paramedics have always been the mobile lifeline for anybody who has had the misfortune of experiencing a medical emergency. Every citizen rests easier knowing that teams of well-trained emergency medical professionals are working tirelessly around the clock to ensure that pre-hospital care is available to us when we need it.
In the wake of recent natural disasters, from the earthquakes that have devastated Haiti and Chile, to the violent storms, flooding, and hurricanes that have ravaged the United States’ coastal regions, we are all reminded of the vitally important and selfless work that emergency medical responders perform when we need them most. Amidst the unique challenges inherent to providing emergency pre-hospital care, these committed professionals experience the joy and deep satisfaction that can only come from a workday spent helping people in their hour of greatest need.
What can I expect from EMT and paramedic school? The work performed by EMTs and paramedics cannot be compared to anything else in the world. This is why the EMT and paramedic schools that prepare these professionals offer fully integrated training programs that are unlike any other medically related professional training in the world. These programs stand apart from all others in the unique focus they place on emergency medical response methods, critical life-saving techniques, and pre-hospital care.
EMT and paramedic training programs offer a well-balanced mix of didactic classroom training, along with a high concentration of hands on clinical practice and exposure to real world emergency medical scenarios.
What are the levels of training that EMT and paramedic schools provide?
There are four certification levels available to emergency medical providers based on achieving increasingly higher levels of training, and in so doing accepting increasingly higher levels of professional responsibility. The respective levels of certification represent the varied levels of education and field experience facilitated by EMT and paramedic schools. This ranges from an understanding of applied medical techniques in pre-hospital care to expert mastery of advanced life-saving procedures. The four levels of EMT and paramedic certification are shown here in order from primary, to ultimate:
- EMT-B (EMT-Basic)
- EMT-I/85 (EMT-Intermediate 1985)
- EMT-I/99 (EMT-Intermediate 1999)
- EMT-P (EMT-Paramedic)
Can I achieve higher levels of certification while working as an EMT?It is interesting to note for all aspiring emergency medical technicians, even those who ultimately wish to receive paramedic training, that they can do so as in stages while maintaining gainful employment, and all the while gaining the most vital and invaluable training possible in the form of field experience.
This is a profession that allows for, and in fact, encourages graduating through the ranks; building upon job experiences so as to take advantage of the expertise and professional confidence that is developed through years of providing emergency medical assistance as part of pre-hospital care. Gaining the basic EMT-B training necessary to begin working is considered a first step for many who ultimately aspire to achieving paramedic certification.
