Exercise science is poised to be as exciting a field for growth in Iowa as it is throughout the nation. The United States Census Bureau reports a 4.1% increase in population in the state for the last decade. This coupled with a considerable aging demographic makes for some excellent employment opportunities in the state for those in the broad field of exercise science.
Work can be found throughout the state in private practices, schools- from elementary to college level- sports teams and health clubs. Jobs can also be found in nursing care facilities, and home health care services. Fields such as ergonomic consulting and equipment design are on the cutting edge and growing in both popularity and demand. Many careers can be started with an associate's program, while for others a four-year degree is mandatory. Some jobs also require national certification and state licensing as well as continuing education.
A large percentage of these jobs will be found at hospitals and medical centers of which there are approximately 130 in Iowa. One of the largest hospitals in Iowa is the 595 bed Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, there is also a 530 bed VA facility and the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Cedar Rapids has two St. Luke's hospitals, and the Genesis Medical Center East is located in Davenport. The Genesis group has a second, Central Park location in Davenport and a third facility in DeWitt.
