An exercise science degree in Oklahoma can open up a world of opportunity. Students study a rigorous curriculum that focuses largely on physical systems: not only those that are most obviously related to physical performance, but others that can be impacted positively or negatively by movement. In short, they study much of the body; even diet is covered. Exercise science students also learn how to assess people’s physical condition and plan for their educational, training, and rehabilitation needs. There are different areas of program emphasis, from physiology to fitness, so it is good to assess career goals and certification needs at the onset. Some graduates choose to be personal trainers, for instance, while others go into clinical work.
There is no single certifying agency for those in the exercise sciences. What exams a person takes and what credentials they ultimately apply for depends on their individual career goals. The American Academy of Sports Medicine offers various credentials, including exercise physiologist and health fitness specialist. The physiologist certification requires a master’s level education while some certifications have significantly lower prerequisites. The National Council on Strength and Fitness and the National Strength and Conditioning Association also offer credentials for those interested in personal training.
