Family Nurse Practitioner Job Description in Alabama - AL

Family nurse practitioners in Alabama are also called Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNP). Alabama requires successful completion of an accredited master’s degree program in a chosen specialty area of advanced practice nursing. Candidates will also need to pass a national certification exam through a testing agency recognized by the Alabama Board of Nursing. Some national certification bodies recognized by the Alabama Board of Nursing include The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, The American Nurses Association – American Nurses Credentialing Center, and The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board. The Alabama Board of Nursing website (www.abn.alabama.gov), provides interested individuals with the application forms and directions on the application process for Alabama. There is an examination fee of $75.

According to the Alabama Board of Nursing advanced practical nursing (APN) candidates who wish to become CRNP’s must also have clinical experience beyond the educational format.  Most family nurse practitioner candidates have worked in the nursing profession as a registered nurse for a number of years, and are seeking to continue to a higher level. Once licensure is granted, the practitioner must meet Alabama RN and APN renewal requirements every two years, and report at least six contact hours in pharmacology continuing education within that time frame. Family nurse practitioner certification can expire if it is not renewed every two years, and a new exam would be necessary to recertify.
