Family Nurse Practitioner Job Description in Colorado - CO

Students pursuing family nurse practitioner licensure in Colorado will need to complete a master's, doctorate, or post-graduate certificate program. These advanced nursing degrees will allow graduates a wide variety of options, depending on their particular specialization. Colorado graduates pursuing family nurse practitioner specialization can expect to make as much as $86,000 per year, according to Indeed.com.  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that this salary is quite a bit more than that of an R.N., but less than an M.D., making it a good option for nurses who want to increase their yearly salary without committing to medical school.

Nurse practitioners in the state of Colorado may also be referred to as Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs). To be certified as a FNP or APN, a nurse must first obtain their RN license. Then, they must complete an advanced degree in the area in which they will be practicing – either a graduate degree or an advanced nursing degree. This degree should be in an area of specialty, such as mental health, family practice, geriatrics, etc.

In addition, an RN must apply to the Colorado Advanced Practice Registry, and they must also apply for prescription privileges. They must also pass the National certification exam in their area of specialty.

For health-conscious individuals, Colorado is a great state in which to live and work. The state has one of the lowest obesity rates in the nation, with plenty of opportunities for exercise and healthy living. Family nurse practitioners, who often educate their patients about healthy diet and exercise, will find this part of their job is a bit easier in the state of Colorado.

For those who plan to set up private practice, it's important to note that, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, a high percentage of patients in Colorado have private insurance and regularly attend scheduled check ups – music to a healthcare provider's ears!
