Family Nurse Practitioner Job Description in Louisiana - LA

According to Louisiana’s State Board of Nursing (LSBN), advanced practice registered nursing includes the practice of nursing by one of the four specialty categories of advanced nurses including certified registered nurse anesthetist, certified nurse midwife, clinical nurse specialist, or nurse practitioner (NP). Among these specializations, NPs have the broadest role and focus on a diverse population serving neo-natal to gerontological needs.

Family nurse practitioners, like other advanced practice registered nurses, have undergone extensive instructional and clinical training requirements in a graduate (typically master’s) program approved by the LSBN. According to a survey undertaken by Health Resources Services Administration (www.hrsa.gov), the estimated number of RNs with graduate degrees (master’s or doctorates) in Louisiana is 14.2%, more than the national average of 13.0%. However, NPs also need to pass a national board certification examination offered by the Nurses Association's American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Therefore, family nurse practitioner certification in Louisiana consists of a few steps. First, you have to be a registered nurse who is currently licensed to practice in the state by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing. Second, you need to successfully complete a master’s degree in an approved program in nursing. A number of such programs are available in Louisiana’s metro areas including Baton Rouge, Shreveport and New Orleans.

For professional nurses including those currently working in any of the state’s elite hospitals such as Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, CHRISTUS Schumpert Saint Mary Place and Ochsner Medical Center, there is also the option of taking these classes online. Third, you have to successfully pass the board certification exam offered by the AANP or ANCC in the FNP specialty.
