Family Nurse Practitioner Job Description in Missouri - MO

To become licensed as a family nurse practitioner in Missouri, you must successfully pass the national certification examination offered by an approved credentialing organization such as the American Nurse Credentialing Center. The requirements for eligibility to take this exam are similar to state requirements for licensure, and include holding a current registered nurse license and holding a degree from an accredited advanced nursing program. Licensure must be renewed every two years by paying a fee and providing verification of a certain number of continuing education credits.

To be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for advance practice nursing with a specialty in family practice, you must hold a master’s degree, post-master’s certificate, or a doctorate from a program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). The program must include specific elements of study, including advanced health assessment, advanced pharmacology, health promotion, disease prevention, and disease diagnosis and management.

The exam itself has 175 questions, of which 150 are scored. There are 25 pretest questions that do not affect a candidate’s score, even though it is important to answer all 175 questions. The questions cover five broad categories, including advanced nursing practice theory, the role of the professional advanced practice nurse, health care policy and delivery, and clinical assessment and management.
