Family Nurse Practitioner Job Description in Pennsylvania - PA

A Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree is necessary for obtaining family nurse practitioner (FNP) certification in Pennsylvania.  An online toolkit developed by two prominent nursing agencies, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) organization, offers valuable resources for nursing instructors and their students.  The toolkit helps FNP nursing students prepare their certification applications, and study for the computer-based exams within a 90-day time period.  FNP certification is valid for five years, but Family Nurse Practitioners must be sure to apply for recertification at least three months before their expiration dates.

As of January 2011, indeed.com listed over 600 jobs for nurse practitioners in various cities in Pennsylvania.  Some of the facilities looking for family nurse practitioners included the Take Care Health facility in Pittsburgh and the Aseracare Hospice in York.

A majority of family nurse practitioners work in group settings with teams of other professionals, but 23 states in the nation allow them to operate independent practices.  Since an FNP provides care for patients of all ages, the family nurse practitioner job description comprises a wide range of responsibilities.  An FNP may conduct physical exams, write prescriptions, diagnose and treat acute illnesses and injuries, manage chronic conditions, order and interpret x-rays and lab tests, and offer advice on healthcare options and healthy lifestyle choices.
