Family Nurse Practitioner Job Description in South Dakota - SD

A career as a family nurse practitioner involves working with patients to diagnose illnesses, perform medical treatment procedures and consult with other healthcare professionals to determine what’s in the patient’s best interest. A nurse practitioner also spends time with patients to obtain a health history and educates them on the best healthcare preventive practices.

Following completion of an advanced practice nursing program with a specialty in family health, students who want to pursue family nurse practitioner certification in South Dakota must pass licensing requirements set by the South Dakota State Board of Nursing. This involves testing for certification through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners in order to validate education and skills at a national level. Another option is to test through the American Nurses Credentialing Center to confirm an understanding of the concepts studied and practiced during school. Both types of exams are acceptable for those interested in practicing as family nurse practitioners in South Dakota.

After obtaining licensure, a family nurse practitioner may begin to work in one of many environments, either with other nurse practitioners and health professionals, or within a solo practice. Even if a nurse practitioner works independently in a clinical setting, according to South Dakota law, a physician must visit his or her location of practice at least once every 90 days. This applies to those nurse practitioners who work in multiple locations, but excludes home care situations or health screening occasions.
