Family Nurse Practitioner Job Description in West Virginia - WV

After completing the required schooling, nurses can seek family nurse practitioner certification in West Virginia by passing a national certification test recognized by the state. To gain prescriptive authority, additional requirements must be met, including establishing a working relationship (collaborating) with a medical doctor and establishing written protocols.

West Virginia recognizes the growing role that family nurse practitioners will take as new health care initiatives are rolled out. In fact, the West Virginia Nurses Association has established the Advanced Nursing Practice Council especially to represent the needs of family nurse practitioners in West Virginia, and to protect their practices.

West Virginia has been concerned about meeting the health care needs of its citizens for the past decade. In 2002, the West Virginia legislature established a commission to study the critical shortage of nurses in the state. That commission reports back to the legislature every February.

Family Nurse Practitioners in West Virginia can work independently of their collaborating doctors, or work with them.  Family medicine plays an important role in West Virginia’s health care system. For example, in 2009, St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington opened a new family care center in Hurricane, to serve residents in Putnam and Cabell Counties. And in Wheeling, the family practice residency program at Wheeling Hospital has won highest accreditation from a national organization, which speaks to the importance the hospital places on family medicine.
