The Arizona State Board of Nursing lists daily statistics on their website of the current aggregate of nurse practitioners licensed in the state. The most recent count was 3539, and includes nurse practitioners certified in treatment of family, adults, women’s health, pediatrics, psychiatry, geriatrics and acute care. Although this number is not broken down into specialties, one can surmise that a large portion of these nurse practitioners are family nurse practitioners. These types of health care practitioners perform many of the same duties as family physicians, providing primary care services and acute care services to patients.
Before enrolling in family nurse practitioner programs in Arizona, one must be a registered nurse licensed in the state. Schools that provide such programs will grant a master’s or doctorate degree, depending upon the program chosen. Classes common to family nurse practitioner programs in Arizona include pharmacology, pathology, diagnosis and clinical management.
In addition, students must fulfill clinical requirements, usually of several semesters spent in a real-life medical setting such as Arrowhead Hospital in Glendale, Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Chandler Regional Hospital in Chandler, Saint Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Western Arizona Regional Medical Center in Bullhead City and Tucson Medical Center in Tucson.
