Family nurse practitioner programs in California are graduate-oriented, and are intended for California registered nurses with bachelor’s degrees who want to take on more active roles in the primary care of families. Schools for aspiring family nurse practitioners exist both online and in traditional, brick-and-mortar form, in California. Most family nurse practitioners in the state obtain a master’s degree, while some opt to study for a bit longer and receive a doctoral degree.

Didactic sessions that family nurse practitioners will experience in a training program will include subjects such as behavioral science, ethics, fundamentals of primary care, pharmacology, health assessment, geriatric medicine, family theory and family practice.

In addition, all family nurse practitioner students must complete a clinical rotation of a certain number of hours, dependant upon the program one attends. These programs are held at California’s respected medical institutions such as Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center in San Francisco, Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, Los Angeles County and the University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles, and Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. Clinical rotations will vary in length but usually account for at least two full semesters. After graduation from graduate school, family nurse practitioners must take a national certification exam before being allowed to apply for certification in the state of California.
