A nurse practitioner is a professional who has completed graduate level education and can perform many of the basic duties of a medical doctor. A family nurse practitioner in Colorado must complete a specialized graduate level program online or at one of Colorado’s campus based schools. FNPs in the state must also hold national certification in family practice and a license issued by Colorado’s nursing board.
According to The Henry J. Kaiser Foundation, there were more than 3,000 nurse practitioners working in Colorado in 2009. Students who plan to enter this competitive field might consider taking a second language while enrolled in their certification program. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Colorado has a large Spanish-speaking population, this means that bilingual medical professionals are in high demand here.
Nurse practitioners often focus on preventative care for their patients, as well as patient education. Family nurse practitioners, for example, might teach their patients about the dangers of smoking, how to prevent childhood obesity, or how to properly manage a medical condition such as Type II diabetes. Nurse practitioners can also perform well and sick child visits and examine and diagnose a variety of basic medical conditions.
Colorado's state economy is highly dependent on the medical service industry, as well as jobs offered by the federal government. After completing a degree program in the Centennial State, newly certified family nurse practitioners may be able to find jobs at Memorial Hospital Central, or Penrose Hospital, Denver Health Medical Center, or with the U.S. Government. Major Colorado cities where nurse practitioners can seek work include Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora, and Lakewood.
U.S Army hospitals are located in Fort Carlson, Denver, and Grand Junction; there are also a number of military bases and academies throughout the state.
