With only a little more than 3,000 nurse practitioners in the entire state of Connecticut, and a growing population of patients, becoming a family nurse practitioner, particularly in the Nutmeg state, is an exciting prospect. Individuals interested in pursuing family nurse practitioner programs in Connecticut must complete a master’s degree in nursing, or in a qualifying field approved by the nurse practitioner certifying bodies in order to be certified as such. The state of Connecticut also requires that all nurse practitioners have a minimum of 30 hours of Pharmacology training. While most state programs provide this education, it is recommended that candidates check with their desired training program to ensure that this qualification is met.
Various online and campus-based programs are available, making obtaining the degree accessible regardless of location and schedule. This is especially beneficial to those who live outside a major city such as Bridgeport, Hartford, or New Haven. Most Connecticut Nurse Practitioner programs require a Registered Nursing (RN) license and a Bachelor’s Degree (preferably in Nursing) in order to apply, and previous nursing experience is often preferred. Despite these requirements, some schools provide combined programs for students who wish to become nurse practitioners but who do not already have a nursing degree.
Training programs range from approximately 40-90 credit hours, depending on school, and involve a mixture of classroom work (either in-person or online), combined with practicum hands-on experience that can often be completed locally (if participating in an online program). For those nurses who already have a Master’s Degree in nursing (MSN), some schools offer a Family Nurse Practitioner Certificate Program, which provides the training necessary to pass the Nurse Practitioner certification exam required by the state of Connecticut in order to practice as a licensed advanced practice registered nurse, or APRN.
