The state of Georgia ranks 5th in the nation for birth rate, according to statemaster.com. With so many families created and expanded on every day, there is a continual need for family practice specialists. One option for entering the family practice field is to become one of Georgia’s family nurse practitioners.

Students enrolled in family nurse practitioner programs in Georgia come from a variety of education and career backgrounds. Fortunately, there are several different types of programs to choose from. Typically, students entering one of Georgia’s family nurse practitioner programs have earned a bachelor’s in science, hold an RN certification, and have practiced as an RN. Other students have a non-science bachelor’s. For these career-switching students, there are programs that help them fulfill their science prerequisites before transitioning into the advanced nursing program.

In addition, there are several accredited online family nurse practitioner programs in Georgia that allow individuals to further their education without interrupting their careers. These programs are as demanding as traditional MSN programs and require a significant amount of self-discipline. A list of Georgia Board of Nursing approved programs is available on the state’s website.

To become a family NP, an individual achieves a Masters of Science in Nursing. This involves coursework and clinical experience that spans two-to-four years. During this time, students receive hands-on experience to put their book knowledge to practice. Students enrolled in online programs also receive this same training, as they are matched with a local medical facility in order to complete their clinical requirements.
