The Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) defines the advance practice registered nursing as the actions performed by registered nurses that have gained additional skills and knowledge through an organized advanced program of study, and are certified by a nationally established agency recognized by the board.  Two such certifying organizations are American Nurses’ Association (ANA), which certifies the APRNs through American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) were known as advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs) in Kentucky before January 10, 2011. Family nurse practitioner (FNP) is one of the categories that APRNs most frequently choose to specialize in. FNPs are simply known as nurse practitioners (NPs) in Kentucky. NPs provide health care to a broad spectrum of individuals ranging from neo-natal to gerontological fields.

In order to practice as an APRN in Kentucky, you must maintain your RN licensure from KBN as well as a current national certification. The minimum educational requirement to obtain national certification is the completion of an approved and accredited master’s program in nursing. There are multiple family nurse practitioner programs in Kentucky that satisfy that requirement.  Aspirants for the program have the option of enrolling in a Kentucky campus in the Louisville, Lexington and Owensboro areas or online in order to work towards the educational requirement of this allied health career.
