All family nurse practitioners who plan to practice in Maine must receive a document known as an advanced practice approval to practice letter from the Maine Board of Nursing. This document can only be received after a registered nurse has graduated from one of the graduate family nurse practitioner programs in Maine and has applied for advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) status in the Maine. Schools offering FNP education in Maine are online and in more traditional college or university settings.
The Maine Board of Nursing sets the standards for all approved educational programs in nursing, including graduate programs. Before entrance to a family nurse practitioner program in Maine, one must first earn a bachelor degree and his or her registered nurse license in Maine. Then a student is qualified to enroll in a master’s level FNP educational program.
Within such a program, coursework will likely include advanced pharmacology, advanced physiology, care of the neonate, care of the adolescent, care of adults, health policies, reproductive care, and a clinical field experience. This field experience gives students the chance to put into practice the knowledge and skills they have learned in the classroom in a real-life medical facility, such as St. Joseph’s Hospital, Maine Medical Center, Brighton Medical Center and Mercy Hospital.
