Family nurse practitioners are registered nurses who are trained to work in an advanced practice setting with patients of all ages. The many family nurse practitioner programs in Maryland provide education for future family nurse practitioners at the graduate level. In order to be admitted to these schools, which may be found online or in a traditional, brick and mortar setting, one must first be a licensed registered nurse in Maryland and possess a bachelor’s degree.

Family nurse practitioner education usually consists of about 800 clinical hours of working with patients of all ages with various types of illnesses or injuries. Health promotion as well as prevention of illness is also stressed in these FNP educational programs. Courses that students typically encounter in an FNP program in Maryland include advanced physiology and pathophysiology, advanced health assessment, health promotion, disease prevention, clinical management of common health care problems, and systems and populations in health care.

In addition, most FNP programs in Maryland require students to undergo a clinical practicum, in which they work in a real-life hospital or physician’s office setting for a specified period of time. Medical facilities in Maryland that are possible settings for field experiences include Prince George’s Hospital Center, Franklin Square Hospital Center, Holy Cross Hospital and John Hopkins Medicine.
