Under regulations established by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing, any Family Nurse Practitioner practicing in the state must hold two licenses: a Registered Nurse license and an Advanced Practice RN license. Family nurse practitioner programs in Massachusetts are open to individuals who already hold an RN license in the state and possess a bachelor’s degree. These schools can be found on the internet as well as in more traditional college or university settings.
Family nurse practitioner programs in Massachusetts are usually considered graduate programs, as they occur after an RN gets his or her bachelor’s or master’s degree. For RNs who already have a master’s degree, a post-master’s certificate program or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree is available. Classes that RNs can expect to take in any family nurse practitioner program include primary care of the adult, primary care of the family, mental health problems of families in various settings, primary care of childbearing families, and primary care of older adults.
Most, if not all, family nurse practitioner programs in Massachusetts will also require students to complete at least one semester-long practicum, where students get the chance to work in real-life settings such as Marlborough Hospital, Winchester Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School.
