Students who want to achieve the objective of becoming family nurse practitioners in Michigan have a few options, but all of them involve completing formal family nurse practitioner graduate programs. If a registered nurse has a bachelor’s degree, he or she can enroll in a master’s program at one of the numerous online or in-state schools offering family nurse practitioner programs. If, however, a registered nurse already has a master’s degree, he or she may still pursue family nurse practitioner studies through a post-master’s certificate or doctorate.
Courses that may be found in most family nurse practitioner programs, regardless of the program’s eventual outcome, include advanced health assessment, advanced pharmacology, advanced clinical pathophysiology, and primary care management. Additionally, students in family nurse practitioner programs must also fulfill clinical requirements, involving working in a hands-on situation in Michigan hospital or medical facility.
Possibilities of settings for clinical experience for family nurse practitioner students in Michigan include William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Bloomfield Hills or Royal Oak; Traverse City State Hospital in Traverse City; Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, Birmingham, Canton, Clinton Township, Dearborn Heights, Novi, Southfield, West Bloomfield and Madison Heights; and Henry Ford Hospital of Detroit.
Certification examinations are required following graduation, and then those who want to work as family nurse practitioners in Michigan may apply for state licensure.
