Find the right school for you
Are you a registered nurse working in Minnesota who wants to make more of a difference in the lives of Minnesotans?
If so, you might want to consider becoming a family nurse practitioner, and taking on the responsibilities of primary care, assessment, treatment and prescribing medications for patients along the lifespan. Family nurse practitioner programs in Minnesota educate registered nurses who already possess undergraduate degrees at the graduate level. Schools for family nurse practitioner training online and across the state offer master’s, post-master’s and doctoral degree programs. Minnesota requires all of its family nurse practitioners to be registered as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses and to have received national certification from one of the approved certification agencies.Programs for family nurse practitioners will combine class work with clinical experience. Classes you will normally find in any family nurse practitioner program, whether taken online or in-person, include advanced physiology, epidemiology, evidence-based practice, family health theory, health assessment, pharmacology, and nursing research.
Clinical experiences will be completed through rotations with Minnesota medical facilities. Some of the options for clinical training that may be presented to Minnesota FNP students include United Hospital in St. Paul; Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis; Children’s Hospital of Minnesota in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Minnetonka, Roseville and Maple Grove; University of Minnesota Amplatz Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis; and St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester and Duluth.
