Some schools in the state offer traditional campus-based academic learning settings, while others provide students more flexibility by offering online courses that require campus visits only periodically during the semester. Various clinical experiences are required to prepare students to become family nurse practitioners. Most programs take two years of full-time study, including some summer courses and/or practica. Although the total number of credit hours varies by program, 45-50 credit hours is typical for didactic coursework as is 600-700 hours of clinical experience.
Requirements for admission to advanced practice nursing programs vary. Most require a bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program; a minimum GPA; current licensure as a registered nurse; and successful completion of an advanced statistics course.
