Bizjournals.com has reported a dire nursing shortage in the state of New Mexico. Because of this shortage, there has been a concerted effort to increase the number of nursing schools in the state. Prospective nursing students now have 17 schools to choose from in the state of New Mexico. Although this nursing shortage isn’t specific to family nurse practitioners, a shortage of registered nurses has the potential to severely limit the number of candidates that could eventually become nurse practitioners.
Those individuals looking to become family nurse practitioners must attend an institution that grants graduate degree in the field of nursing. Prior to attending graduate school however, individuals must complete undergraduate programs in the field of nursing. Undergraduate degrees can be completed as either four-year programs or by completing bachelor’s to master’s bridge programs.
Because of this level of flexibility, students have the option of attending a variety of schools that meet with their budget and professional goals. Those individuals that hold an associate’s degree may complete their bachelor’s degree online, creating the ideal learning environment for the working professional
