Find the right school for you
Currently, there are three schools in North Dakota that offer advanced practice training for registered nurses, but there are many more programs available online. Family nurse practitioner programs in North Dakota are generally open to registered nurses who already hold an undergraduate degree. These programs are offered at the graduate level, and include both classroom work and in-person clinical experience, usually obtained at a medical facility or hospital. Examples of some hospitals in North Dakota that could be used for externships such as these include St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, Ashley Medical Center in Ashley, Jamestown Hospital in Jamestown, Community Memorial Hospital in Turtle Lake, Mid Dakota Clinic in Fargo and Bismarck, Medcenter One Jamestown in Bismarck and St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson.
Because much of North Dakota is rural, students in family nurse practitioner programs are prepared to work in both remote settings and urban facilities. According to Kaiser State Health Facts (statehealthfacts.org), an astonishing 22% of the state of North Dakota qualifies as having primary care health professional shortage areas (HPSAs), compared with just 11.8% in the United States. This means that 22% of North Dakota is underserved when it comes to the availability of primary care providers to serve the citizens. Family nurse practitioners in North Dakota are helping to meet this need and lessen the gap between patients and primary care providers in the state.
