Family nurse practitioner (FNP) programs in Oregon emphasize fields of study and practical experience which will allow graduates to serve as primary care providers for individuals across the entire lifespan. Nurse practitioners can perform physical examinations; diagnose, treat, and monitor health problems; order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests; prescribe medication and treatment; and educate patients regarding healthy behavior. Although FNPs work in a variety of settings such as community health centers, hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and government facilities, they are especially beneficial in rural and medically underserved areas.
Many nurse practitioner programs require a minimum amount of experience working as a registered nurse prior to admission to the program. Another typical requirement is to have a bachelor’s degree in nursing, as this will provide many of the basic interdisciplinary courses necessary to be admitted (e.g., statistics is a required course, but is not a “nursing” class). The program of study will provide in-depth knowledge and clinical experiences in areas such as health promotion, advanced health assessment, advanced pathophysiology diagnosis, acute and chronic illness management, and pharmacology. Many master’s programs take at least two years of full-time study, although many offer a part-time option to accommodate students who continue to work during their schooling. The clinical requirements increase during the advanced portion of the program, therefore students may find it easier to work fewer hours in order to complete their clinical hours. A typical program may require more than 60 credit hours and over 600 practicum hours.
