The demand for preventive and primary medical care for families is on the rise. This comes from the general awareness that routine physical exams, and early diagnosis and treatment of illnesses puts less financial stress on families. Additionally, the emphasis on prevention protects families from the development of long term, serious diseases.

Currently, South Carolina is one of the states with the lowest percentage of available health services per capita in the US, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. The designation of MUP, or medically underserved area, is applied to almost 80% of the state territory, or 45 out of the total 47 SC counties. The lack of available primary care is accentuated by the fact that less than half of all medical school students across the US choose to specialize in family medicine.

The growing need for family medical care has led to the development of a new type of nursing program that trains nurses in medical services previously restricted to the practice of general care physicians. Family nurse practitioner programs in South California, provide on-campus and online education in general medicine, focused on the family unit.

FNPs are uniquely trained to diagnose and treat acute and chronic illnesses in all members of a family, from children, to adults and mature adults. FNPs may specialize in performing and interpreting diagnostic tests, lab work, and X-rays. They can work independently or collaborate with a medical team.
