In 2008, it was estimated that 17.5% of residents in Florida were smokers, 59.5% were considered overweight or obese, 10.9% were affected by diabetes, and only 47.8% of Florida residents reported taking part in moderate or vigorous exercise. Because these are all risk factors for heart disease, a significant need for cardiovascular technicians exists in Florida.

In Florida, cardiovascular technicians are expected to be highly-trained, certified professionals. The first step to fitting this criterion is to understand what type of education is needed to become a professional in this field. Most employers in Florida prefer to hire candidates holding at least a 2-year associate degree in cardiovascular technology. However, there are bachelor programs available as well, and these usually take about 3 years to complete and include a 1-year hospital internship.

Cardiovascular technologist schools in Florida focus on two aspects of cardiovascular diagnostics: invasive and noninvasive. Although the first years of study are dedicated to both general education and general medical education, it is the following years of the degree program that really incorporate the essentials for becoming a cardiovascular technologist.

Currently, there is no licensing regulation for cardiovascular technologists in Florida, which is why educational studies are so important to securing a future in this profession. Some of the core classes of a degree program in cardiovascular technology will include:

  • EKG Patterns
  • Hemodynamics
  • Cardiac Sonography
  • Holter Monitor Studies
  • Stress Testing
