To become a registered dental hygienist in Florida, several steps must be followed.

The following are the steps to become a dental hygienist in Florida.

  1. Must be 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.
  2. Must graduate from at least a two-year dental hygienist program. In Florida these programs are 88 credit hours. There are bachelor’s and master’s degree programs available in this field.
  3. Apply for and pass the National written board exams.
  4. Take and pass a written exam regarding the rules and laws regarding dental hygiene in the state of Florida.
  5. Pass the clinical (practical) board exams for the state of Florida. The candidate is given three attempts to pass the clinical exam. These exams are administered by dentists and hygienists licensed in Florida. The individual sitting for this exam will be required to perform a thorough prophylaxis and root planning on four teeth.
